IMTA Countdown - Week Six
Can you believe it? It's almost here! You're about to be at the IMTA Convention! We want to wish you the best experience possible. A week of adventure, learning, opportunity and fun! Thank you for being a part of the IMTA Countdown. We hope you found it beneficial as part of your IMTA preparations. We've enjoyed counting down the weeks with you and sharing our best tips for success.
You've probably been preparing for the Convention by doing things like practicing your monologues, commercials or make-up application. Hopefully, you've been exercising to get in great swimwear shape, or maybe you've been training your voice to hit those really high notes. With all the major preparation you've done, we've compiled a list of last-minute hints to help you put your best face forward and wow the judges:
The Most Important Thing
One of the best things you can do for your looks and health is to arrive for the Convention rested. The week can get pretty intense and you'll be ahead of the game if you've been getting your eight hours. Eating healthy foods helps, too. Remember if you feel good on the inside, it shows on the outside!
Perfect Posture
The way you present yourself is key to making a good impression on the agents, managers and casting directors you'll see during the week. Prevent stooped shoulders by repeating these exercises several times a day:
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and clasp your hands behind your back. Straighten your arms, raise them as high as you can and hold for 30 seconds.
Pinch your shoulder blades back several times and hold for a count of five each time.
Lie face down on your bed and lift one leg and the opposite arm, holding for a count of 10; then lift the other arm and leg. Repeat this process three times a day.
Fresh Faces Going Places
Since agents like to see minimal makeup on girls (and none on the guys), you'll want to make sure you have radiant skin as your perfect foundation. Here are some tips to give you a healthy, beautiful glow. Prevent dry lips and give yourself a smooth surface for lipstick by super-moisturizing. Starting a day or two before you leave for the Convention, apply moisturizing lip balm several times a day. This will not only soften your lips, but it will also make them appear fuller. Try Kiehl's Lip Balm #1 for amazingly soft lips. This product also gives a great shine when applied over lipstick. Origins Conditioning Lip Balm is another amazing product to check out!
It is very important to stick to your skincare regimen, using a facial cleanser, toner and moisturizer. Make sure you pick products that match your skin type, (i.e. oily, dry or combination). We like Clinique's three-step system. Neutrogena and Cetaphil have some great products, too.
Don't forget to get your hair in great shape, too. Blow-drying can take a lot out of your hair, so put the moisture back in by using a deep-conditioning hair treatment or mask. Try ThermaCare's moisturizing hair wrap or Pantene's Deep Treatment Hair Mask. Girls, a manicure or pedicure can be an essential finishing touch. Stick with neutral colors and short to medium length.

Faces: Iconic Portraits of Los Angeles Fashion--Nick Verreos makes a "brief" photo Cameo!!!
Late last year, I was asked to partake in this wonderful opportunity to be photographed for the Faces: Iconic Portraits of Los Angeles Fashion, an ongoing series of books with portraits capturing some of the fascinating people who work for or on behalf of the Los Angeles fashion industry. The entire idea was produced, edited and directed by John Arguelles, President at Lloyd Klein Couture, and a man with an inspiring vision and an unstoppable love of LA and it's Fashion.
"Volume 1" of the book--due out next month--will feature over 150 of these people--a wide range of 'subjects", from Retailers, Editors, Factors, Stylists, Models, and of course, Designers. It is dedicated to James Galanos, our very own Master COUTURIER and was photographed by Steve Anderson. The first video of the portraits is up and features LA fashionistas from my very good friend, California Apparel News Editor-in-Chief Alison Nieder, to Fashion Historian Sylvia Sheppard to LA Times Fashion Critic Booth Moore to designers Randolph Duke, Sue Wong and myself.
For the shoot, John asked me to just show up--and I did after dealing with back-to-back pattern-making, draping and design meetings--When I saw how FABULOUS and made-up Miss Sue Wong looked (ALWAYS a DIVA--take a look a the video below!), I now wish I would have at least put on a jacket, a dress shirt and a tie!!!!

This world map by Diego Ribero, published in 1529, labels the Americas as MUNDUS NOVUS (Source: Wikipedia)
Will modern-day Viking Miss Norway be the new Miss World?
Russia owned a part of the New World, until the USA bought it from them.
The New World - Puerto Rico to be precise - will be the home of the new Miss World 2010.
The New World - Puerto Rico to be precise - will be the home of the new Miss World 2010.
Beauty School predicts that the MUNDUS NOVUS (New World) will be the home of the new Miss World. Puerto Rico is the (almost) unanimous choice of the faculty, with Prof. Chandni selecting India, of course. If Puerto Rico does not capture the 2010 crown on Saturday, then Norway or Russia will.
MISS VENEZUELA 2010
En el magno evento de la belleza, Miss Miranda Vanessa Goncalves, 24, became the new Miss Venezuela 2010. She will represent Venezuela at Miss Universe 2011. Miss Amazonas Ivian Sarcos was elected to compete at Miss World 2011. Miss Distrito Capital Jessica Barboza was elected to compete at Miss International 2011. And Miss Aragua was elected to compete at the next Miss Earth.
DVR ALERT!
Beauty School students in the USA can watch the pageant on Sunday at 3:00pm ET on Univision.
MISS WORLD 2010
Miss World 2010 is Miss United States Alexandria Mills of Kentucky. She won the title just moments ago in the glittering diamond anniversary edition of Miss World in Sanya, China. First runner-up was Miss Botswana Emma Wareus. Second runner-up was Miss Venezuela Adriana Vasini. Rounding out the top five were Miss China Tang Xiao and Miss Ireland Emma Waldron.
WORLD CONSPIRACY
Resultatet kan ha vært påvirket av Fredsprisen
"The result may have been influenced by the Peace Prize" says the headline in the Norwegian newspaper Aftenbladet. In the headline article, the director of Miss Norway, Geir Hamnes, says, "...we know that it has been speculated that the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to ...Liu Xiaobo may have affected the result. This has created a strained relationship between Norway and China. There were two Chinese on the jury, and if they failed to vote for Mariann for political reasons, there would be enough for her to lose a top position."
The article goes on to say that Hennes quickly added that this is just speculation and is very difficult to prove. Well, Beauty School's Prof. Chandni thinks it is true - she never met a conspiracy theory she didn't like, and this one is one of the World's best!
MISS GHANA 2010
The new Miss Ghana 2010 is Stephanie Karikari, 18. She won the title during a glittering, four-hour ceremony on Saturday in Accra. Her prize package includes a new car and an entry ticket to Miss World 2011. First runner-up in the contest was Esther Gadagbui and second runner-up was Frances Efiba Nyamikeh.
